Government

Sleep research is critical to the public health, and the Sleep Research Society works with government officials to secure a future where sleep research is a priority. The SRS works towards this goal by through member campaigns and lobbying efforts.

As budget deficits and cost cutting remain an emphasis in Congress, the White House and the American public, the SRS focuses its efforts on ensuring that sleep research continues to be funded at the National Institutes of Health. NIH funding is vital to the process of scientific discovery. Preserving the initial investment in health care innovation and biomedical research, through NIH grants, fosters economic growth and is vital to the innovations that strengthen the public health.

"NIH funding is vital to the process of scientific discovery."
Members of the SRS Board of Directors frequently attend and participate in meeting and functions of the NIH and other governmental agencies. All members of the SRS, from full members to trainees, can also help preserve a future for sleep research by contacting your Congressperson. The SRS has provided talking points for members to use when contacting a U.S. Representative or Senator.

The SRS has also mounted campaigns that have a direct impact on the public health. The SRS helped campaign against drowsy driving, through efforts to introduce state legislation and educational programs. The SRS also worked to reduce the risk of patient injury and deaths by medical error through recommendations for Safe Work Hour Legislation for physicians and residents.

You too can help ensure a future for sleep research, and safer roadways and hospital. Let your voice be heard by contacting congress or by participate in activities held by the SRS Government Relations Committee.
