The study of epigenetics has changed the paradigm of research on the human genome. It is one of the most promising and burgeoning fields in the current biomedical research landscape. Studies have shown that epigenetic factors are responsible for controlling the expression and function of genes and have emerged as important mediators of development and aging, neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, autoimmune disorders, and obesity to name a few.

Jointly sponsored by the Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology and the Epigenetics Center at the University of Pennsylvania, the organizers have assembled an outstanding group of scientists and leaders in their field to present at the conference. The program was designed to provide overviews in several areas of epigenetic research and sleep disorders and to stimulate discussions on how these areas could interact and complement each other. Dr. Paolo Sassone-Corsi, Director of the Center for Epigenetics and Metabolism at the University of California, Irvine, will give the keynote address on October 3rd.

The objectives of the conference include identifying research opportunities, strategies, and methodologies to further elucidate epigenetic mechanisms in sleep processes and recruiting outstanding young investigators into this area of research. Travel awards are available to trainees who submit abstracts chosen for presentations.  The deadline to submit an abstract is July 31, 2012.
