Strategic Planning Steering Committee Created

Sleep Research Society
Wednesday, April 30, 2014

The Board of Directors of the Sleep Research Society has embarked upon an assessment of the needs of the society in preparation for the shaping of a new strategic plan. To this aim, the board created a Strategic Planning Steering Committee that consists of the SRS Executive Committee plus the board liaison to the Membership and Communications Committee (Drs. Janet Mullington, Allan Pack, Ron Szymusiak, Sean Drummond and Jennifer Martin).

A request for proposals was sent to a few highly recommended strategic planning consulting firms and we received two excellent proposals. We interviewed the respondents and, following discussion with the board, we selected one of the respondents.  We are now working with Stacey Zawel, Phd, of TSI Consulting Partners, Inc.

Our process will include a survey that will be sent to the membership, the convening, by conference call, of strategic planning workgroups and a strategic planning retreat later in the fall or winter. At the board meeting earlier this month five strategic planning workgroups were planned. These groups will discuss 1) membership, branding, and outreach; 2) scientific offerings of our society; 3) training and professional development; 4) government affairs; 5) society revenue. These strategic planning workgroups are currently being formed and will hold conference calls over the next several months leading up to a strategic planning retreat.

I wish to thank the members of the Membership and Communications Committee for their work in drafting a questionnaire to be sent to the membership. I would also like to thank the Strategic Planning Steering Committee for their hard work in getting this process off the ground, particularly Dr. Allan Pack (President-Elect) for his creativity, enthusiasm and partnership in this endeavor. I will soon be handing Dr. Pack the baton, but I will support him in this continuing process as he takes over the lead.
