TRAINEE ABSTRACT AND TRAVEL AWARD PROGRAM

The Sleep Research Society offers a limited number of awards to help trainees attend the APSS Annual Meeting. There are two types of awards: Abstract Awards issued on the basis of scientific merit and First Time Travel Awards for trainees who have never attended an APSS Annual Meeting. Trainees may apply for only one type of travel award. If an applicant applies for both awards, then only the merit-based award will be considered. Additionally, starting with the 2006 APSS meeting, limits will be placed on the number of Abstract Awards a trainee can receive over his/her career. Please see below for more details..

To be eligible for either type of Award:
  • Applicants must be trainee members of the SRS and currently engaged in sleep research. Applicants may join the SRS when they submit the abstract and apply for the award.
  • Recipients must register for and attend the Trainee Symposia Series at APSS as well as submit a complete program evaluation. Note that you are not automatically registered for the Trainee Symposia Series when you register for APSS. You must specifically register for each.
  • Awards will only be distributed at the end of the Trainee Symposia Series .

These awards are primarily intended to further the career development of students who are actively pursuing an academic degree, or who are in the early stages of post-graduate training in the areas of sleep. The dollar amount of the award to each recipient depends on the type of the award.

Historically, there are more Abstract Awards based on scientific merit issued than First Time Travel Awards. Award winners will be notified by e-mail (or fax if e-mail address is not provided) prior to the advance registration deadline for the APSS Annual Meeting.

Career Limits on Awards
Starting with the 2006 APSS meeting, the SRS will set limits on the number of Abstract Awards a given individual can receive. These limits are set separately for each stage of a trainee’s career, and stages shall be defined by membership status. Currently, trainees can be either Predoctoral members or Postdoctoral members.
  • Predoctoral members will be limited to 4 Abstract Awards regardless of the number of years the individual is a predoctoral member.
  • Postdoctoral members will be limited to 3 Abstract Awards, which is equivalent to the number of years one can be a Postdoctoral member.
  • Once a trainee changes membership category from Predoctoral to Postdoctoral, the maximum number of future awards will be 3, regardless of how many they received as a Predoctoral member. That is, this is not a lifetime limit of 7, but a separate limit for each stage of a trainee’s career.
  • There will be no exceptions to the limitation policy.
