First Time Trainee Travel Awards Program Offered for SLEEP 2010
The SRS will offer a limited number of First Time Trainee Travel Awards for SLEEP 2010. Trainees who have not previously attended an Annual Meeting of the APSS may apply.

To apply for a First Time Trainee Travel Award, applicants must submit the following materials and must address each of the topics listed below:
  1. Applicant CV: Including current mailing and email address (preferable) and fax number, educational history, relevant employment history, honors and awards, research funding and publications.
  2. Applicant letter (maximum 2 pages): Including certification that the applicant has never attended an APSS Annual Meeting, a description of current research activities, a description of the applicant’s future career plans and goals, and a discussion of how attendance at the SLEEP 2009 meeting will enhance the applicant's research and career plans.
  3. Mentor letter (maximum 2 pages): A letter from the applicant’s mentor or departmental advisor must document the applicant’s eligibility for this award (including trainee status), describe the trainee’s involvement in sleep research, and outline the current plan for mentoring the student in sleep research activities.
Complete applications submitted by the deadline will be scored based on the following criteria:
  1. Research productivity to date. Level of training will be taken into consideration.  Note: Preference will be given to applicants who have authored or co-authored abstracts submitted for presentation at SLEEP 2010. Applicants who did not submit presentations for the regular abstract deadline may take advantage of the opportunity to submit late-breaking abstracts. This should be noted in their application.
  2. Future research plans including the applicant's goals and plans to achieve those goals.
  3. Career Development Plan including the applicant's plans for training in sleep research.
  4. Mentoring plan and training environment. The mentoring plans and training environment should support the trainee's research and career development plans. This must be clearly outlined in the letter from the applicant's mentor.
The deadline for receipt of the First Time Trainee Travel Award applications is Monday, February 15, 2010. Send complete applications, merged into a single PDF file via e-mail only to the SRS Coordinator, Nick Cekosh at ncekosh@srsnet.org. No late or incomplete applications will be considered.

First Time Travel Awards will be judged competitively based on the applicant's promise for a future in sleep research. The dollar amount of these Awards will depend on the total number of awards given. Award winners will be notified by e-mail within one month of the application deadline. Individuals accepting these awards are required to attend the 2010 SRS-Sponsored Trainee Symposia Series held on June 5, 2010. No exceptions will be made to this requirement. Individuals may apply for both a First Time Trainee Travel Award and a Travel Award based on Scientific Merit; however, the applicant may accept only one of the awards.
