Each year at the APSS Annual Meeting, the Sleep
Research Society presents awards to members who have made significant contributions to the field
of Sleep Research and/or Sleep Medicine. The Distinguished Scientist Award is the
Society’s highest award for scientific advances in the field of sleep research. The award is
given for significant, original and sustained contributions of a basic, clinical or theoretical nature. The Young Investigator Award recognizes an outstanding research effort by a new investigator in the field of sleep research.
Distinguished Scientist Award
This is the Society’s highest award for scientific advances in the field of sleep research.
The award is given for significant, original and sustained contributions of a basic, clinical or
theoretical nature.
Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award
The Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award is presented to individuals based upon novel and seminal discoveries of a basic, clinical or theoretical nature that have made a significant impact on the field of sleep.
Young Investigator Award
This award recognizes an outstanding research effort by a new investigator in the field of sleep
research. The basis for evaluation of candidates is a single publication in a refereed journal;
the candidate should be the first author; and the article must be published or officially accepted
for publication by the application deadline.
Mary A. Carskadon Outstanding Educator Award
This award is given to an investigator to honor his/her outstanding effort in disseminating basic and/or clinical sleep research as a mentor, teacher, or through public education
Jubilee Awards
In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of REM sleep, the Sleep Research Society
is pleased to honor the seminal contributions of the Founders and Significant Early Contributors
in the field of modern sleep research.
J. Christian Gillin Junior Faculty Award
The Sleep Research Society is pleased to announce that the first J. Christian Gillin Junior Faculty
award is presented to Washington State University. WSU appointed David Rector, Ph.D. to fulfill
the sleep position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Veterinary and Comparative Anatomy,
Pharmacology and Physiology. Thus, Dr. Rector will become the first SRS/J. Christian Gillin
assistant professor.
Bill Gruen Award
Awarded annually since 2005, the Bill Gruen Award recognizes the highest-rated abstract in the instrumentation category. The award was established in memory of Bill Gruen, founder of Ambulatory Monitoring, Inc., in recognition of his many contributions to the sleep field.
